BRUXELLES CITY TRIP

Many V-day gift guides will soon be popping up left right and centre in no time, so here is my contribution ahead of the game. A guide to one of the best gifts of all: the gift of travel. This year, Valentine's Day falls on a Saturday which makes it the perfect opportunity for a weekend getaway. If you have already ticked Paris off of your list or are looking for an alternative to the French city of love, why not give Brussels a go? I fell in love with the city and the country (and later, the guy) after having spent a year working in the heart of Europe. Below are a few places I hold close to my heart that I think are worth adding to your itinerary.

Friday - Arrival in Brussels
boulettes liegeoises
Whether you are arriving on the Eurostar, the TGV or the snail-rail that is the SNCB, a hearty dinner will be much needed. On one of my first nights, I decided to go out and explore on my own and ended up at the Roy D'Espagne on the Grand Place for dinner. With a fire at the centre of the dining hall, it makes for a cosy feast when paired with a plate of meatballs in a Liégeoise sauce.

Satuday - A romantic day out
What would Valentine's day be without a bit of chocolate? One of my favourite places to take friends and family is the Neuhaus Café in the Galleries Royales, right next to the very first Neuhaus store. Did you know that it was Jean Neuhaus who created the first ever praline? At the café, you can indulge in an abundance of chocolate as well as many tasty macarons. I would highly recommend the hot chocolate!

Sunday - A stroll around the city
place du petit sablon
The Place du Petit Sablon is one of my favourite places. During the first few weeks of my professional training year, I spent many a lunch break sitting opposite the fountain of the Counts of Egmont. If you head on over to the Parc d'Egmont, which is located just behind The Hotel (see below), you can find the Peter Pan statue - a commemoration to the children of the UK and Belgium. The Place Poelaert is a few steps away from the park and it provides for a lovely view over Brussels. From it, you can spot the top of the spire of the Town Hall and even the Atomium far off in the distance. There is a lift right at the edge of Place Poelaert that will take you down to the Marolles area, which known for its antiques, and take a short walk towards Place de Jeu de Balle where a daily flea market runs from 7am to 2pm.

I was lucky enough to have the view from the Place Poelaert as one of my pit stops on the way to work. If I had enough time, I would sometimes take 5mins to sit on a bench before I started my day.

This building, the Palais de Justice, quickly became one of my favourites. It was the first thing I saw whenever I left work and took the lift up to catch a metro at Louise to go home.

If you have time to wander over to the European quarter go to the Parc du Cinquantenaire at the Metro stop "Merode" on the lines 1 and 5 and climb to the top of the Arc du Cinquantenaire for a fantastic view over the park. Stop for lunch at La Terasse and sit outside under the overhead heaters, snuggling up to your other half.

AX PARIS - THE SEQUIN DRESS

IMG_5655 copy
Oh I have been absolutely itching to show you these photos which Christine and I shot back in October. I was so lucky to be able to keep three of the dresses that I walked in at the #axparty and I thought it would be cool to take some extra special photos with Christine when she came to visit. You may remember the sneaky peeks I put up in my post here. These photos were definitely worth waiting for and I am beyond happy with how they came out! Of course we were incredibly lucky with the weather, and the beautiful sunshine makes it seem like I am relaxing on a balcony somewhere in the south of France. I also love how the light glistens over all the little sequins - it almost brings the dress to life and gives it its own personality. I will without a doubt be wearing this AX Paris dress on a ladies night out with my gals when I am back in Luxembourg. Bring on the holiday season!

I met up with Claude earlier this week on my lunch break to do a spot of shopping and grab some food. Of course, we ended up browsing so much that we kinda lost track of time and I ended up buying a sandwich to go and eating it at my desk haha - priorities. This is the kind of outfit I would wear to work on a good day. A good day being if I wake up early enough or if I have just done washing the night before and found some time to set aside an outfit. Along with the black fluffy jumper, I also got one in pink. I just could not resist it. I feel like a giant marshmallow! It certainly does keep me warm and I cannot wait to get more wear out of it. Pastel colours like this are such a great way to bring colour to an otherwise dull outfit so I am really loving all the pink items that are in store right now!

A RAINY DAY ON THE GRAND SABLON

DSC_0151-001
On Tuesday earlier this week, I met up with Claude during my lunch break to eat sushi and to pick up a very exciting package. A good few weeks ago when I was around at her place lounging on her sofa like I totally live there already, she told me about this new brand from Luxembourg which I should check out. Naturally, I was very intrigued as it is not often that something exciting emerges in our little country of Luxembourg. After months and months of planning, Sentinel City was officially registered in March of this year and their first collection was released just a month after. They have now released the A/W winter collection which is quickly selling out. You have no idea how excited I am to be able to introduce you guys to a young Luxembourg-based brand! Now down to the knitty-gritty (knit-ty get it? I deserve my own spot on the Fringe Festival), this beanie is perhaps the most snug little thing I own. Even though my fluffy mittens were a tough competitor, this thick beanie definitely makes it to the top. I also love that it is tight enough around my head that I do not have worry about it flying off in a strong icy gust of wind.

If you wanna keep up-to-date with their journey, go check out their Instagram or Facebook page!

SUNDAY MORNING

IMG_5370 copy
Around two weeks ago, Christine came to visit me for the first time in Brussels. We had such a wonderful weekend together and on the morning she was supposed to leave, we spontaneously decided to do a mini shoot in the morning sunlight. I slipped into my loose Topshop vest, New Look skirt and pearl/gold chain (also from Topshop - surprise!). If only every Sunday morning was like this in Brussels. Winter is truly on its way and it has been drizzling non-stop. I know I really should not complain about the rain so much as it is not that much of a shock considering it is Brussels, but I wish it did not rain so much because I am still loving my maxi skirts. They are the comfiest things to travel in when I take the train to back to lux but they soak up any rain water like a sponge - not the most fantastic look!

ABOUT TOWN

DSC_0097
I have been itching to show you guys this coat for so long. There is this store on the Rue Haute, close to where I work, where you can buy clothes by weight (15 EUR/kg) which is where I found this beauty for only 16 EUR - it was such a find! It is the perfect coat to wear over a simple monochrome outfit on a cold and windy day. I am visiting the Manfriend in Köln on Thursday so I will most likely be taking this with me. I cannot for the life of me remember where I bought my bracelet but I have a feeling that it is either from Accessorize or from some store in Japan. I wore this outfit for a grand day out of shopping on Saturday and towards the end of the day, I stumbled across the Kenzo store near Namespoort metro station - I will most certainly be trekking back there again to have an extra long browse!

JUBELPARK

DSC_0050
The Manfriend is here for this weekend and after yesterday's wild night of minion painting (seen here) we had a really lazy start to our day. We headed on up to a restaurant to sit outside as they have heaters above as well as below the tables - so cosy! We then took a very autumnal stroll around the park which resulted in a cheeky gauffre purchase. We of course had to stop for a couple of outfit photos. I am pretty sure that you guys are sick of seeing this jacket making a recurring appearance in my posts but I really am wearing it daily. It is simply too cold to only be wearing blazers and the standard leather jacket is the perfect solution for that! I thought the leather-look skirt would be a bit too much with the jacket but I think the denim shirt tones it down nicely. I do frequently check out the blog links which are occasionally left in the comments so do leave links to your latest fall looks here - I would love to see them.

FALL BACK

IMG_5117
My oldest and one of my best friends, Christine, came to visit me this past weekend and it was so nice to finally spend a good, long weekend together. Check out my Instagram to see what we got up to! We of course had to take some photos in the park where a lot of the leaves had fallen already allowing for a beautiful outfit photo backdrop. decided to wear my black Zara trousers with a simple H&M top and my pearl necklace from Topshop. I then put on my striped blazer from Primark to complete my monochrome look. I must have made somewhat of a good choice because when we were having lunch at the Grand Place, two sweet, elderly and fabulous-looking American ladies complimented my outfit! It totally made my day.

I found the perfect midi skirts when I went shopping on Friday! I had been on the hunt for a specific style because all the others I have come across were too thin, too long, too this, too that... All of them were just a little bit "off" for my liking. But then I wandered into H&M and saw this one hanging. I pounced. I do think this outfit would have looked better with a short jumper - perhaps a cropped one - but I am not a major fan of my belly jelly so I opted for this Zara monochrome jumper (see better photos of it in this post). If you are pear-shaped like me, I would love to know how you style your midi skirts and dresses so do leave a comment and/or leave a link to a recent outfit or look you have put together.

BRUSSELS FASHION DAYS 2013

Claude and I decided to go to last weekend's Brussels Fashion Days evening and we got to have a look around at the wonderful belgian talent. The venue itself was pretty awesome and we both found a bag brand which we absolutely love! Vers Versa was started up by Belgian-Irish actress Sinead with the amazing concept of interchangeable bags to fit any lady's personality. "Trends change and so do you" - I could not have put it better myself! I love that you can buy a bag and adapt it to whatever occasion or time in your life! We all go through a leopard phase, a bold colour phase, a "I promise I don't hate the world but I love all-black" phase... The list goes on. I will definitely have to hunt down a store which will be selling the latest collection as this is definitely something that I would save up to spend my money on. They are priced around 200-400 EUR depending on the style and size you buy. What do you guys think? Would you buy one too?

I am seriously so obsessed - I cannot stop thinking about these beauts!

SHOPPING WITH THE SWALLOWS

DSC_0770
I met up with Claude yesterday and we did a spot of shopping at a nearby mall. I have to say it was quite a successful one as I finally found a new leather jacket! It was 80 EUR but considering that the ones I had come across until yesterday were peaking at prices such as 120-140 EUR I thought it was a pretty damn good purchase. I also bought a few basics in H&M which I will definitely be featuring in future outfit posts. I managed to hunt down the perfect midi skirts so expect a few looks with them soon!

PARC DE BRUXELLES

DSC_0589
So, last week was pretty busy. On tuesday morning I headed off to London for the Cosmo Blog Awards and met so many lovely ladies. Check out my instagram to see a few snapshots of the night. As soon as I got back I headed straight out of the door again to browse in the H&M by Porte de Namur where I found these boots. This weekend the Manfriend came to visit and we spent Saturday having a walk about in the city centre. After a meal at the Roy d'Espagne we walked to Brussels Park, took a walk archaeological site which lies underneath the palace and then in the evening went to the Nuit Blanche event. It is quite safe to say that we had a full walk of the city and these boots did my feet a service. They will without a doubt be my go-to shoes for A/W. Being the ever so paranoid person that I am, I also recently bought a small pouch in H&M to keep my phone even safer whilst carrying it around with me in my bag. It also matches perfectly with my current favourite nail polish "Thigh High" by Essie.
