CHEERY CHERRY BLOSSOMS

One of my favourite things about Spring are seeing the cherry blossom trees in full bloom and I wish they would last longer than 2-3 weeks! Oh wow, how often have you seen me write "transitioning out of monochrome" or something about how I want to stop wearing as much monochrome...? Just when I thought I was making tremendous efforts with outfits like this one or this one, I go right back into my comfort zone. Here, I am wearing a simple Topshop cami with a white studded bomber jacket which I found in H&M a while back but for some reason I never got into wearing loads. Sometimes I will buy something and forget about it for a couple of months but then re-discover it in my wardrobe a little while down the line. Does this ever happen to you? Or am I a complete weirdo? Perhaps it is down to the fact that I find a lot of end-of-season sale items which I bring out when that season comes around again.

DINNER IN LUXCITY

I met up with an old friend of me last week on Friday and it was so so so lovely catching up and having a good old chit-chat! We went to this Mexican place called Mamacita on the Rue des Bains and had the most delicious fajitas. I cannot wait to go back there again next time I am in Luxembourg! The staff are so incredibly friendly - always stopping to talk and suggest a few things here and there - which really puts the cherry on top of eating out for dinner. I decided I wanted to dress up a little bit so I went for my new Geox heels which are so unbelievably comfortable and my Primark blouse. Yes, I know, you are probably sick of seeing something from Primark in every single post, right? I cannot help it, though, I found so many great pieces whilst in Cardiff. I paired this look with a Zara necklace and I of course had to throw my Marc by Marc Jacobs bag over my shoulder!

The Company Style Blogger Awards 2014 is still open to nominations and I would really appreciate it if you headed on over there and nominate www.karinablog.com under "Best blogging duo or team" and www.kristianavasarina.com under "Best personal style blog". It would meant the world to us to have two Luxembourg bloggers at the awards! THANK YOU.

TO BLOG OR NOT TO BLOG...

23 April 2014 marks the 450th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare and so in celebration of this day, today's blog post is a sonnet:

Shall I compare thee to a summer's dress?
You flow with the wind and your branches sway;
Fluttering without failing to impress,
You send spiralling petals on their way.
Your blossoms had been blooming but now parks,
Seen covered by a blanket of pink snow,
Are layered with rays of sunshine which marks,
The approach of long nights we used to know:
No need we have of swaddling layers,
No faces wrung with discontent or chills
Mother nature has answered our prayers
And tulips follow golden daffodils.
With disrobed branches, this not be the end,
For our winter woes journey to be mend.

HELLO AGAIN

Last week on Wednesday, Christine popped over for a brief trip to Brussels to check out the Geox x Fashionata event. Before heading there we decided to snap a few shots of my outfit which I had worn at work earlier that day. There are some days where I feel like leggings, a simple top and some trainers will do but other days, days like this one, where I feel the need to dress up just a little more. Both Christine and I were so excited because it was a first event as KARINA since we relaunched three months ago. I was also incredibly excited about meeting Sofie, the blogger behind Fashionata; she was absolutely lovely to talk to!

I have to admit that growing up, I always saw Geox as that shoe store with the super comfy but not quite so stylish shoes. I was very much under the sole impression (get it?) that the shoes they had were either children's shoes or shoes especially made for walking. Imagine my face when I felt my eyes pin-ball-machine-ing across the room, darting from pair to pair. I never would have thought that Geox had designs as cool as this animal print one (click here) with blue accents - it is so perfect for someone like me who is consistently reverting to monochromatic clothing. I can already picture an all-white outfit top off with a sleek white blazer, my favourite Marc by Marc Jacobs bag and those trainers. We had the chance to pick out a pair of shoes and if you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen them already. Keep your eyes peeled for an up-coming outfit post.

LAUREL LONDON BLUES

A little while back, I went into town with my parents to have a Coffee Lounge breakfast (see the photo here) and the weather was so lovely that I decided to wear a pair of shorts. Yes, shorts! It was really THAT warm. I bought these in Primark - no surprise there - and I am so crazy for this mad print with rich blue details. I love that they even match my Laurel London phone case. And wow just as I was writing this post I realised that this blazer is actually from Primark too! I bought it about a year ago when I was still living in England. Does it not feel so great when you find those few really cool pieces in Primark? I do not really venture off in there often but when I do, it usually takes a few "rounds". I seriously cannot wait to slip into these during summer. Holidays in the sun here I come!

BLOGGER BRUNCH OUTFIT

Last week was the first of hopefully many Luxembourg blogger brunches (see photos from that morning here) and so I wanted to make a little extra effort with my outfit. I had picked out this beautiful print dress which I got from the Primark in Cardiff but I unfortunately did not realise that the dress rode up my bum whenever I walked and so I grabbed my orange split maxi skirt to slip it on over the dress as moving about on a pogo stick or a mobility scooter were not exactly feasible solutions. I find it a bit of shame as I really do love the print - I may just grab a pair of scissors and turn it into a crop top!

LIGER SHOES

I have been um-ing and ah-ing about buying a pair of leopard print flats as the last pair I bought were a questionable 8-pound pair from Primark. I absolutely love prints but there was something about the thought of an all-leopard shoe that did not really do it for me. I love the leopard Vans-style slip-ons that so many people seem to have and which so many brands seem to have emulated, but I could not wrap my head around the style - I did not think they were very me (N.B. I say this now but this idea of "me" and style without a doubt changes over time). When I was in Cardiff visiting my younger brother, we came across a store that sold a variety of clothing items - both men and women - and a variety of brands too. I spotted these shoes and then zoomed straight towards them like there was no tomorrow. I absolutely adore the tiger head on the tip of the leopard print covered shoe by YRU. I think it makes for such an awesome change!

LUXEMBOURG BLOGGER BRUNCH

It has been a while since Sammie, Claude and I first started talking about putting together a bloggers' get-together for our little country Luxembourg and yesterday the day of our blogger brunch finally arrived. We all met at Table du Pain on Avenue Monterey for some food and to have a good old chit-chat. We were a little group of 8 which may seem small but it was so lovely to be able to get to know  the girls behind the screens and to Instagram our food without any judgement - haha! I really do hope that this was the first of many meet-ups to come. It really was so great to have the chance to meet up with Ariane, Anne-Sophie, Christine, Emilie, Jenny, Kristiana and Sammie, and I also hope that we will be able get together more of the gals who did not get to make it to yesterday's mid-morning blogger feast. There is no feeling comparable to that of being among people who share the same passion as you.

PERPAHDERG

It takes about 3 hours for me to get home from Brussels and I am usually quite exhausted from the journey. One of the best things about coming back at the weekend though is this little guy! Every time I come home he comes to greet me at the door with his tail wagging in full force. We have had the little man for over 10 years now and so a lot of the time he likes to be a grumpy little old man but sometimes if I lie down on my bed he'll come and snuggle up to me on my chest, just under my chin - it's the most adorable thing ever. Now that the weather is getting so much better I think I'll take him along to the city's park more often to have a stroll and picnics.

GREY & GALISFLY

The weather last week was absolutely beautiful and so it was only right to take full advantage by having a picnic in Luxembourg City’s main park on Saturday afternoon. The Manfriend and I made sandwiches and fruit salad, and grabbed a blanket to lie on. We also took my dog along for our grand day out which the little monster had been over the moon about. Even though the sun was shining, I knew it would still be a bit too chilly and so I paired my Uniqlo skater skirt with a pair of tights and my hand-me-down cashmere sweater. Wearing different types of greys has truly been a godsend of solutions for my incessant habit of opting for dark clothes.

I would also like to take this post as an opportunity to mention that the Company Style Blogger Awards 2014 are now open for nominations. Christine and I would appreciate it so much if you would nominate www.karinablog.com under "Best International Blog" or "Best Blogging Duo or Team". Last year, Kristiana and I made as finalist under the same category in another blogger awards. It would be so lovely to see an even greater Luxembourg presence on the blogging scene and so it would be lovely if you could also take the time to nominate Kristiana (www.kristianavasarina.com) under "Best Personal Style" or "Best Fashion Blog" - nominations can be made here.

NICOLE x MISSGUIDED

Hello from Cardiff! I am here visiting my younger brother for the weekend and so far the weather has been surprisingly lovely for what I expected from Wales but it definitely is not as nice as when Christine and I were in Luxembourg City's main park. We grabbed an incredibly health McDonald's take-away to eat whilst sitting on the grass and soaking up the sunshine (see an Instagram photo here). We then took a stroll along the path to take photos of this Nicole x Missguided dress under the cherry blossoms. So many of the dresses which Nicole helped design are very edgy and are typical statement pieces which I feel not yet confident enough to pull off, but this fishnet insert black dress is just right for me.I think it can be easily worn in the day like I have done here or for a night out with a pair of black heels, a studded clutch and a bright red lip.

Hello from Cardiff!

TAMING MY MANE

I do not often get bombarded with questions and so I have been debating on whether or not to do a Q&A post, but one question and a few comments which keep coming back tend to refer to my hair and so I thought it would be a good idea to do a post all about it and how I care for it.

I inherited my mum’s thick and dead straight Japanese hair but unlike my brothers, mine is lighter than theirs. When I was a lot younger it was actually a golden colour – almost blonde! (Click here for a baby photo). I have dyed my hair a couple times but the last time was well over 6 and half years ago, and so now the colour you see is natural. I also have not been to a hairdresser’s for 4-5 years. I usually get my hair cut in Japan because they seem to know exactly what to do but my past couple of trips have been too short to book in an appointment, which is why I trim my own hair every 5-6 weeks.

As awkward as I feel talking about showering habits, I should probably mention that I try to wash my hair every night – something which may not suit all hair types – and I start off by washing my face, followed by my roots/scalp and then I leave in my conditioner for the rest of the time I am in the shower. I suppose you could call this a “deep conditioning” as I leave it in for well over 10mins. I also “brush” my hair with my fingers if I forget to brush before getting in the shower, which is often the case. As for shampoo and conditioner, I use a Carrefour supermarket brand when in Brussels but while I am back in Luxembourg I use Pantene’s normal-thick hair range. I have never really stuck to one brand but I am growing to love Pantene; I especially love their hair masks.

I also use very minimal heat on my hair besides when I am experimenting with curling it – something which usually happens every 2-4 months. I am an evening shower person as I prefer to allow my hair to air-dry which I think contributes to keeping my hair healthy – this takes a good few hours to dry and ain’t nobody got time for that in the morning if they do not own a hairdryer.

If I have missed any details out or if there is anything you would like me to cover, then please do let me know! I would also like to thank you for making it until the end of the chunky post.
